Character Trait Analysis Charts

Grade Seven - Language Arts 

Overview: 

This activity will help students identify and explain characters’ traits and motivations, by considering their speech, thoughts, and actions. 

Materials: 

Steps: 

    1. On a Post-it® Flex Write Surface or whiteboard write down three category headers: speech, thoughts, actions. 
    2. Distribute one Post-it® Super Sticky Mini Easel Pad, three Post-it® Flags and three Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to each student in the class.

    1. Each student chooses whether they will search for a character’s speech, thoughts, or actions.

    1. Students will search a text or book to find passages where a character demonstrates speech, thoughts, or actions and use the Post-it® Flags to mark each page or passage. 
    2. Students then decipher which character trait the passage displays and write it on the Post-it® Super Sticky Notes. 
    3. The Post-it® Super Sticky Notes with the character trait is stuck to the Post-it® Super Sticky Mini Easel Pad page and the quote from the text along with an in-depth explanation is written for why that character trait was chosen.

    1. Students share their work by sticking their Post-it® Super Sticky Mini Easel Pad to the Post-it® Flex Write Surface or whiteboard under the corresponding category.
