Post-it® Super Sticky Notes with numbers and symbols stuck onto a wall.

Number Line

Counting is an important part of our everyday life and finding fun ways to reinforce number recognition and representation helps our little ones develop their numeracy skills! This simple lesson will get your littles up and moving while they sort, match and order the numbers one to ten. You only need a couple materials and a few minutes to set it up!

Materials:

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, Scotch® Painter’s Tape and a marker in a basket.

Target Age Group: Preschool - Kindergarten

Subject: Numeracy, Number Recognition, Number Representation, Number Order, Play-Based Learning

Goal: Place the numbers in order in a number line and match the quantity to its symbol

    Estimated Time: 15-30 Minutes

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes with numbers and symbols stuck onto a wall.
    1. Using Scotch® Painter’s Tape, create a line on a flat surface like a table, counter or wall! Make sure it’s long enough for ten Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.
    2. Write the numbers 1-10 on Post-it® Super Sticky Notes. I used an alternating pattern of colours as a way to scaffold the lesson for those who don’t have number order memorized and to embed a little patterning practice into the activity!
    3. Place these Post-it® Super Sticky Notes on one side of the tape line. To make it more difficult, place them in a random configuration!
  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes with numbers and symbols stuck onto a wall.
    1. Represent the numbers 1-10 on more Post-it® Super Sticky Notes using little symbols like hearts, triangles, dots - anything goes! I made sure that the written number and the symbols were on the same colour Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to make this activity a little easier for early learners.
    2. Place these Post-it® Super Sticky Notes on the opposite side of the tape line. Once again, to make it more difficult, place them in a random configuration!
    3. Invite your littles ones to peel and stick the Post-it® Super Sticky Notes in order on the number line. They might want to match the symbols while they go, or they might choose to place the numbers in order all at once and then match the representations afterwards. Follow their lead!

You can easily reset this activity to play again since the Post-it® Super Sticky Notes are indeed super sticky! To make this lesson more difficult, stick to single colour Post-it® Super Sticky Notes or use a larger range of numbers. Time to play!
