Pompom Colour Sort

Sorting by colour, shape and size (or any other attribute) is a great way to develop important numeracy skills at an early age. By creating hands-on learning activities that encourage sorting behaviours, we introduce our little ones to mathematical concepts in a way that is developmentally appropriate and engaging! This activity is simple enough that your little ones can work on it independently, freeing you up to catch up on all the tasks on your to-do list. It’s perfect for quiet time, rainy days or any time you want to keep those little hands busy!

Materials:

  • Post-it® Flex Write Surface packaging next to scissors, Post-it® Flags and Tabs and pompoms.

Target Age Group: Preschool - Kindergarten

Subject: Fine motor, Sorting, Colour Recognition

Goal: Develop fine motor skills and sorting (an important numeracy skill) with this hands-on learning activity! Select coloured pompoms and place them on the line flagged by their matching colour. Try to cover the whole line!

    Estimated Time: 20-30 Minutes

  • Lines drawn on the Post-it® Flex Write Surface.
    1. Find a flat, clean and dry surface that you want to transform into your activity centre! I used the lid of my sensory table but the top of a shelf, craft table or lid of a bin would work too.
    2. Roll out your Post-it® Flex Write Surface and cut a piece to size so you can cover your surface. Peel off the backing and smooth it out onto your new activity center! You can write on the Post-it® Flex Write Surface using a permanent marker which is ideal because it stays put during play but easily washes off with just water when you are done.
    3. Using a permanent marker, draw various lines across your activity center. I used all kinds of fun lines. Straight, squiggly, loopy, jagged - there are no rules here!
  • Lines drawn on the Post-it® Flex Write Surface.
    1. Stick a Post-it® Flag onto each of the lines on your activity centre. These will be used to indicate which colour should be sorted onto each line! I love how there are Post-it® Flags for each colour of the rainbow.
  • Post-it® Flags and matching-coloured pompoms placed on various parts of the lines on the Post-it® Flex Write Surface.
    1. Fill your sensory table or any bin with a variety of coloured pompoms. You can add a fine motor tool like child-safe tweezers if you’d like!
    2. Time to play! Pick a pompom out of the bin at random and place it on the line with the matching colour. Try to cover the entire line with pompoms!

My favourite part of using the Post-it® Flex Write Surface is that when you’re done, you can clear off your lines with just water (it even comes with a spray bottle and cloth!) and then your activity center is fresh and ready for your next learning experience. Think of all the other amazing lessons and activities you can create with your new activity center. Happy creating!
