The Teacher I Want & Need

Teachers always set expectations for their students; however, what do students expect from their teacher? By creating this Post-it® Note anchor chart, teachers will gain insight into what their students are hoping for in a teacher. Giving students Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to anonymously express their thoughts gives every person in the room a voice that helps build a positive learning environment and classroom community.  

Materials: 

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Mini Easel Pad with Post-it® Super Sticky Notes and a question from the teacher being put together.

    Grades: 4-8 

    Subject: Not subject specific/Community Building 

    Goal: To build a positive classroom community 

  • A hand writing
    1. Inform students that just as teachers have expectations of their students, students should have expectations of their teachers as well.  
    2. Post a Post-it® Super Sticky Easel Pad paper on a flat surface and write the question “What Kind of Teacher do I Want?  
    3. Hand out a Post-it® Super Sticky Note to each student and ask them to anonymously write down what they need, or expect, from their teacher. 
  • Post-it® Super Sticky Mini Easel Pad paper with students’ answers written on attached Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.
    1. Have students post their Post-it® Super Sticky Note on the Post-it® Super Sticky Easel Pad paper.  
    2. Give students the opportunity to share their thinking with the whole class verbally if they feel comfortable doing so. 
    1. The teacher will read the Post-it® Super Sticky Note and take the students’ wants and needs into consideration in relation to their teaching.  

    Giving students the opportunity to express their wants and needs from the teacher allows students to see that their thoughts and feelings are valued. It also provides the teacher with important details about how to be an effective teacher for the class.
